It was the fourth day of November and I had seen hardly any geese migrating — a good excuse to drive out and look for these large birds
With BG riding shotgun and using his eagle eyesight to spot, we headed west of Marquis to gander at a big slough where waterfowl gather.
The slough was dry — an unusual occurrence. A large slough on the grid road south of Keeler had plenty of water but no geese.
We stopped in at Smooth 42 Craft Distillery in Brownlee and chatted with co-owner Adam Dombowsky.
He too hadn’t seen any migrating geese but suggested they will be here after the coming weekend’s snowfall.
BG tasted the apple pie moonshine, made from a recipe Adam bought from an old-time moonshiner. Yours Truly, the driver, declined a taste. It is smooth drinking. Too smooth!
Their newest and best-selling product is a potent vodka called Crea8. The buyer adds water and can infuse the drink with flavours such as raspberry, lemon, cinnamon or whatever.
The bottle with measurements and the process are patented, a fact that Manjit Minhas of the liquor family didn’t care for when they appeared on Dragons' Den and got a $150,000 investment.
The bottle sells for $4 less than other vodka.
On we went south, seeing a white-tailed buck running in the distance.
Then BG spotted what he thought were geese on the edge of a dry pothole covered with weeds.
The 500m lens saw what appeared to be a post with a cross until the ears wiggled. Two deer were hiding in the weeds.
Moments later, nine mule deer ran out from their hiding spots in the weeds.
We headed the green Prius west towards Pelican Lake hoping to see a moose. On the west side of the lake a muskrat in the dry powder pool under the bridge eluded the camera.
On the way back to Moose Jaw we spotted a large coyote on the north side of the Trans-Canada Highway, apparently waiting for a safe time to cross.
Oh, yes, we did see a few Canada geese swimming in a slough, south of Brownlee.
