After weeks of preparation and planning, Moose Jaw Kinsmen Minor Football decided to pull the plug on their prospective South Saskatchewan Spring Football League at the beginning of May.
The league was designed to give high school-aged players a chance to play a modified season after seeing their regular fall league cancelled. Basically, an opportunity to get some semblance of a campaign under their belt.
But the ongoing pandemic restrictions proved too onerous and the MJKMFL decided to cancel the whole project at the beginning of the month after the province’s staged re-opening plan wouldn’t allow things to start until mid-June.
Then came Tuesday of this past week, and everything changed.
The province announced that sports could start playing games as of May 30, and just like that, the Spring League was back on.
“We kind of figured things were just going to slowly open and we’d have no chance of doing anything until the fall, and all of a sudden it’s ‘wow, we can actually just go play football’,” said MJKMFL president Bryan Boys. “It’s nuts and it’s awesome.”
While the schedule of games and how many teams will take part is in the process of being finalized, Moose Jaw will have a team, and that crew will begin practicing this Monday.
To that end, the league has e-mailed players who registered with more information, and anyone signed up can also contact Boys at [email protected].
“We have coaches lined up and everything like that, but we’re still tracking everything down and getting everything put together,” said Boys, who is hoping to see the season start on the June 12 weekend.
