Local construction started the year in low gear.

Building permit values from city hall of $769,000 for nine projects amounted to less than half of last January.

The city issued nine permits worth $2.2 million that month.

Only one permit was issued for a new home, compared with six worth $1.85 million in 2019.

Major permits included $150,000 for a retail shop in the Civic Centre Plaza; $42,000 for an office in the new building at 7 Thatcher Dr. East; $80,000 for a prefab building at Superstore; and an unspecified value condominium on Hodges Crescent.

Two residential alteration permits worth $100,000 each were issued, one on High Street, one on Laurier Street.
