Drivers need to be sure that everyone in the vehicle is property restrained, or face the consequences.

Seatbelts, car seats, and booster seats are the focus of March’s Traffic Safety Spotlight. Throughout the month, law enforcement across the province will be focusing on passenger restraints.

Tickets for not wearing a seatbelt or not having a child properly restrained will cost drivers $175, along with three demerits.

SGI says that wearing a seatbelt reduces your risk of being injured or killed in a crash by about 50 per cent.

Between 2009 and 2018, improper or non-seatbelt use was a factor in an average of 34 fatalities and 231 injuries per year in Saskatchewan.

“There are many fatalities we attend that would have had a different outcome if the victim was wearing a seatbelt,” A/Cpl. Adele Breen of the RCMP F Division Forensic Collision Reconstruction Program said in a press release.

Throughout 2019, police across Saskatchewan reported an average of more than 500 tickets issued every month for people not being properly restrained in seatbelts or car seats/boosters.

Car seat clinics are a great way to ensure child safety seats are insalled properly. More information is available online.
