Shuffleboard is one of the many popular events taking place regularly at Timothy Eaton Gardens.
Older adults in Moose Jaw will have a chance to check out everything Seniors in Motion has to offer during a special open house running through the end of the week at Timothy Eaton Gardens.

Participants aged 50-plus can take part in a wide range of activities, ranging from pickleball, shuffleboard and carpet bowling to a host of card games and even line dancing. You can also check out the art room or woodworking shop if that’s more your thing -- all for the cost of $2 per activity.

Action runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. from now through Jan. 8, with things wrapping up a special Chinese food supper for $20 per person on Saturday night.

“These are all our regular activities that are happening and this is just something for this week where we waived all memberships,” said Tanya Legare with Moose Jaw District Seniors. “Usually if you get the membership you get a discount on the activities and stuff like that, but this week, if you're a member or non-member, come try us out.”

Timothy Eaton Gardens traditionally hosts a regular schedule of activities on a daily basis. For a $40 basic annual membership, participants have access to all activities on the main floor, including discounts on activities and meals in the cafeteria. A $60 enhanced membership includes the basement level, which includes the walking track, gym equipment and the various shuffleboard and carpet bowling facilities.

Each activity during the week includes a group leader, who can offer instruction and tips to get the most enjoyment out of the events.

Legare says there has been quite a bit of interest in the open house, with a steady stream of visitors through the first three days. And with so much to do, folks are liking what they see.

“It’s been cold and there's a lot of people worried about that new variant but for the most part we’ve had quite a few people out,” Legare said. “In three days, we've probably had 30-plus new memberships signed up, so we’re pretty happy about that.”

There’s an added bonus for participants, too -- for every activity folks take part in, their name is added to a draw box for a host of prizes, including the grand prize of a one-night stay in the honeymoon suite at Grant Hall.

All door prize draws will be made Saturday at the supper.

As the week continues, Legare is hoping to see even more newcomers take part, with the possibility of more activities being added or their current offerings expanding depending on interest.

“It's been nice to see,” Legare said. “It gives us a chance to see what's going to work or if we need to bring something different in to kind of spice it up for our members. Whatever we can do to make it a lot of fun for everyone.”
