Seedy Sunday offers a look at all things seeds and gardening

Moose Jaw Public Library event gives patrons a jump on spring for local growers
Normally, calling something ‘seedy’ would be a bit of an insult.

But when it’s in Moose Jaw – Canada’s Most Notorious City – and involves gardening, hey, if the rubber boot fits…

The Moose Jaw Public Library held their annual Seedy Sunday this past weekend, offering a chance for vendors and gardeners to connect at the local library and get a jump on the upcoming gardening season.

“We have seed vendors from all over Saskatchewan and a couple from Alberta,” said event organizer Christina Hinds. “It’s like a seed exchange, you can come and buy seeds and we have some composters here, too, it’s a good place to get a start on whatever gardening you plan to do.”

Vendors featured tables filled with tiny packets of pretty much every plant available in western Canada and beyond, while others offered tips and information on other aspects of gardening. Patrons could even purchase books covering a wide gamut of plant topics.

“Some people start in April, some start in May, so this is a chance for people looking to get a chance to pick up their seeds early,” Hinds said.

The event also acts as an opportunity to promote the library’s seed bank, which features a wide selection of potential produce that can be taken for free.

“It’s almost like checking out books, you can check out some seeds, take a few and plant them in your garden and bring back whatever you don’t use,” Hinds explained. “We have lots of things, beans, peas, lettuce, all kinds of fruits and vegetables.”

Around 135 people took part in the event.
