Seedy Sunday at MJPL getting an early start to spring

Seedy Sunday returns to the Moose Jaw Public Library to get Moose Jaw in the mood for spring

The Public Library has had its Seed Library available for a few years now, where anyone can come by and borrow some seeds, and bring them back later in the season once those plants have grown.

There may still be some ice on the ground, but the Moose Jaw Public Library is ready to think about spring with the upcoming Seedy Sunday meetup on Mar. 8.

Seedy Sunday is a handy way to get started on garden preparations, with a number of seed vendors and fellow gardeners all in the same place.

“For anybody who’s into gardening, there’s a lot of nice conversations to be had by being there,” said Gwen Fisher, head librarian.

Vendors will include the Yara Community Gardens, who will have community plots available to plant on both Gray Ave and Home Street West this year, as well as Post Horizon Booksellers with a selection of gardening literature.

Prairie Worm Works, a worm composting expert from Regina, will also be there to talk about using the wiggly creatures to turn food waste into nutrient-rich compost fertilizer.

Foreground Coffee is also promising their coffee bar, and the library will have a craft table for the kids and door prizes to be won as well.

The focus of Seedy Sunday is to talk about seeds, said Fisher. With the Library’s Seed Library available — in which library members can take and leave seeds of their choice to share with others — as well as a seed exchange table, Seedy Sunday is an easy way to expand the variety in your garden.

“It's a great way to get heirloom or unique seed varieties that probably most of them have been grown in Saskatchewan,” said Fisher. “And when you talk to seed vendors, it’s pretty common to get cool tips or stories about the seeds you might be purchasing.”

The Moose Jaw Public Library will open its doors at 10 a.m. for the event, which runs until 2 p.m. There is no charge to attend, and Fisher hopes to see plenty of gardeners taking advantage of the opportunity.

“You don't need to be a seed expert to have fun at Seedy Sunday, even if you're not even really a gardener, you're just curious,” said Fisher. “People just get to talk gardening all morning, which is really fun.”
