Band City Stray Cat Rescue and Protection Society Inc. (SCRAPS) is excited to offer its newest raffle for an amazing purple Martin birdhouse.

This birdhouse was built by Mr. Lammle, a supporter of the organization, who built the birdhouse to resemble a grain elevator built in 1973 that once stood in the small town of Roleau. Unfortunately, the grain elevator was destroyed by fire on Nov. 5, 2021.

The draw for the raffle will take place on Aug. 20, in conjunction with World Homeless Animals Day. The cost per ticket is $5 with all proceeds going entirely to SCRAPS’ TNR program to proactively help control the overpopulation of feral cats.

Tickets are available for purchase at:

  • SCRAPS 9-Lives Boutique (in the Town ‘N’ Country mall)
  • Pet Valu
  • MJ Animal Clinic
  • DDK Pet ‘N’ Points
  • Bellamy Harrison Animal Hospital
  • The SCRAPS Booth at the Wakamow Farmers Market

"We try and let people know that the animals that are out there, that are getting into your garbage cans or hiding in your shed; they're looking for the same needs to be fulfilled that we have as humans. They need shelter, they need protection, and they need food, so we try to help people recognize that," says Anne Marciszyn, president of SCRAPS.

The birdhouse raffle is not the only fundraising initiative in which SCRAPS partakes. They operate a store at the Town ‘N’ Country mall to generate funds, open only Fridays and Saturdays. Every Saturday, SCRAPS is at the Wakamow Farmers Market with a booth of feral cat information, as well as selling cat-related products.

Another fundraiser is their recycling initiative "Recycle for SCRAPS and Save a Litter," as well as "Pizza for Paws" fundraiser in co-ordination with Family Pizza in Moose Jaw where a portion of the funds generated go back to SCRAPS.

"I'd like to thank our community for supporting us so generously through the years, and especially through COVID which was very challenging,” says Marciszyn. “We just really want to thank everybody; we want to thank our business partners, all the people who have donated to us, and all our volunteers that dedicate and volunteer so much time.”

The Band City Stray Cat Rescue and Protection Society Inc. is a non-profit organization that began in 2011 with a mission to reduce the at-large feral cat population in a humane way and to stabilize their overpopulation.

This year has been extremely busy for the organization with what they believe to be “pandemic pets,” pets bought during the pandemic that were abandoned after the pandemic.

Many rescues and animal shelters are at full capacity and that includes SCRAPS with intake freezes taking place all over Canada. SCRAPS is doing its best to continue to stretch to make more rooms for its cats.

They look to accomplish their mission through their Trap, Neuter and Release (TNR) program. The TNR program is a program that humanly traps, spays/neuters, and vaccinates these feral cats in our community. They are also one of the  few organizations that vaccinate cats for rabies, not only allowing for a healthier cat population but a safer and healthier human population as well.

In addition to the TNR program, SCRAPS also offers a vast foster care network and adoption program for their cats. The foster care network is comprised mostly of volunteers that will take in tame cats or kittens until they can find a more permanent home for them.

The foster-cat parents are supported through different satellite sites like Pet Valu in Moose Jaw, Pet Smart Regina, and Excalipurr Cat Café in Regina. The adoption program does have a fee for adoption, but all that money goes directly back to helping the cats.

You can see these adorable adoptable cats at the SCRAPS boutique at the Town 'n' Country mall, as well as at their satellite sites.
