The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League is taking a novel approach to their upcoming player selection draft this summer.

And for Moose Jaw Minor Hockey products, that could mean seeing your name called whether you were born in 2006 or 2007.

The draft traditionally takes place shortly after the Western Hockey League Prospects Draft, focussing on players who are more likely to play in the SJHL after the top-ranked potential-future-NHL standouts have been selected.

With the WHL Prospects Draft slated for Thursday, May 19, the SJHL Draft will take place on Wednesday, June 1, and will see a higher number of players selected than usual due to the ongoing pandemic.

The SJHL Draft will begin with six rounds of 2006-born (15-year-old) players followed by two rounds of 2007-born (14-year-old) players. The move comes after the 2021 Draft was cancelled due to limited viewings for the league scouting staff after much of hockey in the province was shut down last January due to the third wave of COVID-19.

More details will be released closer to the date.

The SJHL is currently in their holiday break, with league action set to resume during the Jan. 7 weekend. For the latest news, scores and standings, visit www.sjhl.ca.
