Prospective students looking to enrol at the Saskatchewan Polytechnic campus in Moose Jaw will have an opportunity to meet with student recruitment specialists throughout March and April this spring.

The first recruitment event took place on Feb. 27 as a question-and-answer forum.

If you missed the initial “Uncover and Discover” event held at the Moose Jaw campus or the parallel event held in Regina, there’s no need to worry.

“This was the first time we’ve held this particular event, but it is one of several different events that we have coming up,” explained Scott Hellings, the student recruitment advisor for the Moose Jaw Sask. Polytechnic campus.

Each spring, Sask. Polytechnic typically holds a number of recruitment events across its four campuses in the province.

These INSIGHT events help with student recruitment by allowing prospective individuals to experience a temporary immersion into certain programs to get a taste and feel for career options at the school.

“It provides an opportunity for individuals to experience a program for a few hours, meet with faculty, ask questions, interact with current students, (and) perhaps even participate in a hands-on activity,” Hellings said.

The Moose Jaw campus will have six programs participating in the INSIGHT program this spring.

These programs are electrical engineering technology, engineering design and drafting technology, carpentry, agriculture and food production, as well as a joint event with the school’s civil and environmental engineering programs.

Mature students – described as being out of school for 10 years or more – will also be given an opportunity to explore and register for upcoming courses on March 26.

“In recruitment, we often get people who just know they want to go back to school, and maybe have a vague idea of the types of things they are interested in,” he said.

“So… they come talk to someone like (me) and they can learn more about programs that we offer that fit into… that bucket of interests that they have.”

The recruitment advisors then provide further information on admission requirements, how to individually meet those requirements, and they go over the application and admission process.

Because each program offered at the school comes with unique admission requirements, Hellings said there’s no generalized advice to offer on the admission process. He did, however, mention that some programs – such as the business diploma program – only require students to have completed their Grade 12 or GED equivalent to qualify.

Certain courses listed as “competitive entry” programs, such as health care courses, may come with other requirements that include a minimum grade point average and certain prerequisite classes.

Sask. Polytechnic operates differently than the standard university model.

Once a student has been accepted into a program, they don’t have to sit down with an academic advisor to select individual courses or work out a path to graduation. Each course is set out for students at the time of enrolment.

“If a person ever does need career counselling advice, they can reach out to our career counselling team and make an appointment. If they want to know more about programs at Sask. Polytechnic, they can always reach out to a student recruitment advisor like myself…,” Hellings explained.

To arrange a campus tour or for any questions pertaining to student enrolment, Hellings can be reached by phone at 306-691-8385 or by email at MooseJawRecruit@SaskPolytech.ca.

Hellings also noted that individual students may be able to explore and interact with programs not offered as part of the INSIGHT program happening this spring, so it’s always best to call in and check.
