Saskatchewan residents are getting back to work as the economy continues to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Statistics Canada’s seasonally adjusted Labour Force Survey, there were 4,700 more jobs in the province in August compared to July.

Saskatchewan’s unemployment rate in August was 7.9 per cent. That is the lowest rate among the provinces. The national rate is 10.2 per cent.

Additionally, the unemployment rate for youth is 15.3 per cent. That is also the lowest among the provinces and well below the national unemployment rate of 23.1 per cent.

Employment is now at 95.7 per cent of its pre-pandemic level in February — 555,800 jobs compared to 580,700 jobs. Saskatchewan’s job recovery rate is third-highest among the provinces, behind only New Brunswick at 96.4 per cent and Manitoba at 95.9 per cent. The national recovery rate is 94.3 per cent.

“Our provincial economy is demonstrating the strongest recovery in the country from the challenges of the COVID pandemic and it’s thanks to the hard work of Saskatchewan people,” Immigration and Career Training Minister Jeremy Harrison said in a press release. “With the lowest unemployment rate in the nation, it’s clear people are getting back to work and helping our economy recover and grow.”
