‘Race for Recovery’ puts pedal to the metal for mental health at mall

Presented by Swervin’s Indoor Racing Inc., the Swervin’ Mini Indy event ran from noon to 5 p.m. on May 24, drawing families, spectators, and supporters eager to cheer on local racers while raising awareness for operational stress injuries faced by Canada’s first responders

MOOSE JAW — The west parking lot of the Town ‘N’ Country Mall turned into a racetrack with a purpose as the “Race for Recovery” returned, combining high-speed thrills with a message of support for mental health.

Presented by Swervin’s Indoor Racing Inc., the Swervin’ Mini Indy event ran from noon to 5 p.m. on May 24, drawing families, spectators, and supporters eager to cheer on local racers while raising awareness for operational stress injuries faced by Canada’s first responders.

With proceeds supporting OSI-CAN — a program of the Canadian Mental Health Association designed specifically for military personnel, veterans, and first responders — the event highlighted a growing mental health crisis among public safety professionals.

According to recent figures, 26 per cent of military and police personnel, 17 per cent of firefighters, and eight per cent of corrections officers and paramedics in Canada were diagnosed with PTSD in 2025.

“We do not want our military or first responders in Saskatchewan to be a part of these statistics,” the event’s promotional materials emphasized, calling on the community to show their support through action and awareness.

Organizers billed the day as a high-energy blend of “community, courage, and compassion,” offering free admission to the public and encouraging donations and participation in support of those who serve.
