The Quality Inn & Suites Moose Jaw is holding their annual charity BBQ on Thursday July 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of the new Canadian Tire. Funds raised will benefit the Humane Society and Transition House.
“This is our fifth charity barbeque,” said Lisa Schenher, regional sales manager at the Quality Inn. “We’ve hosted these for STARS air ambulance and for Riverside Mission. This one this year is for the Transition House and Humane Society.”
Representatives from the Moose Jaw Transition House and from the Moose Jaw Humane Society will be at the BBQ to help out and talk about their organizations.
Participants can donate any amount they choose in return for a hamburger or hot dog and a drink. The food has been donated by Hub Meat Market.
Donators will also be entered to win one of four prizes donated by local businesses.
The first prize, donated by Canadian Tire, is a Lakeside Wicker Patio Bistro set valued at $599.
In addition, there are three $100 Fifth Avenue Collection jewelry store gift cards to win.
“One of the reasons we picked the Humane Society is because we’re a pet friendly hotel,” Schenher explained. “We have pet friendly rooms, and when they come in they get treats and different items for dogs or cats.”
Schenher said that Liz Rowe, front desk manager at the Quality Inn, has gone above and beyond to make their location pet friendly. Rowe makes cat and dog beds from old sheets and comforters so that pets have somewhere comfy to sleep.
“We understand that people travelling with pets, they’re family, right? And they’re treated that way.”
They chose Transition House this year in recognition of how difficult COVID public health requirements were for women seeking shelter from domestic violence.
“It was tough for them, with spacing and so on,” Schenher said. “And one year we adopted a family there for Christmas, we bought all their gifts and everything for the holiday."
Schenher said that working with local charities to help the community is her favourite part of the job and that the other employees who work on charitable initiatives feel the same way. The BBQ has become an anticipated annual event.
