A new program will help Saskatchewan residents with income assistance.

The Saskatchewan Income Support (SIS) program will begin accepting applications from new clients on July 15.

According to a news release, SIS will be simple, transparent, and client-friendly.

It is expected that SIS will benefit clients in a number of ways. This includes:

  • monthly earned income exemptions that will allow clients to keep more of the money they earn as they enter the workforce;
  • through motivational interviewing, staff will support clients to make positive decisions, manage their benefits/household expenses, and reach their goals;
  • a new online application so clients can apply whenever they want and from wherever they want; and
  • a simpler benefit will allow staff to spend more meaningful time with clients, helping them address their challenges instead of filling out paperwork.

Clients who are currently on the Saskatchewan Assistance Program (SAP) or Transitional Employment Allowance (TEA), will continue to do until the programs cease in the summer of 2021, until clients voluntarily move to SIS, or no longer require income support.

The Saskatchewan Assured Income for Disability (SAID) program will remain in place. It will continue to operate alongside SIS.

New applications for SAP and TEA will not be accepted as of July 15.
