Province added more jobs in September

Saskatchewan continues to offer job seekers more employment opportunities.

The province experienced its 14th consecutive month of job growth in September. 

Year-over-year employment rose by 13,300 jobs, which is an increase of 2.3 per cent.

The unemployment rate was 5.3 per cent in September (seasonally adjusted). That is down from 6.3 per cent in 2018.  

Saskatchewan tied with Ontario for the fourth-lowest unemployment rate in the country. The national average is 5.5 per cent.

“Saskatchewan experienced record highs in terms of employment in the month of September, in spite of external factors contributing to ongoing economic uncertainties,” Immigration and Career Training Minister Jeremy Harrison said in a press release. “Our government will continue working hard to ensure Saskatchewan people have the ability to work and contribute to the growth of our great province.”

Highlights for September include:

  • Female employment increased by 4,200 ( an increase of 1.6 per cent);
  • Off-reserve Aboriginal employment increased by 4,900 ( up 10.7 per cent), while Aboriginal youth employment was up 1,000 jobs (an increase of 11 per cent);
  • Month-to-month employment rose by 600 jobs from August 2019;
  • An all-time high was recorded for the working-age population (891,200).
