The Prairie Hockey Academy Cougars U16 Prep squad showed that age doesn’t matter with a 5-0 win over the Regina Capitals, while the Moose Jaw Warriors had a tougher time of it with a 9-2 loss to the Estevan Bruins.
The Cougars are back in action this afternoon when they travel to Regina to face the Capitals; the Warriors are tentatively in Estevan for their rematch on Sunday, pending the upcoming winter storm.
The PHA U17 Prep Cougars are also in action Saturday as they travel to Swift Current before hosting the Broncos for the second game of the home-and-home Sunday.
PHA U16 5, Capitals 0Prairie Hockey Academy find themselves playing a localized schedule due to the Canadian Sport School Hockey League season shutting down due to the COVID-19 outbreak, and they couldn’t have asked for a better start to the campaign.
Austin Seibel stopped all 28 shots he faced to earn the shutout as the Cougars picked up their comfortable win.
Rowan Calvert scored a pair of goals and added an assist for PHA, who led 2-0 after the first and 4-0 through two. Clark Furman added a goal and an assist while Jace Bymoen and Ryder Knutson had their other markers. Theo McGuire and Marshall Light tacked on a pair of assists each.
PHA fired 40 shots at the Capitals, including 20 in the first period alone, and were two-for-seven on the power play.
Estevan 8, Moose Jaw 2The Warriors got off to a rough start at the Red Knight Arena at 15 Wing, surrendering four unanswered goals in the first period.
Lyndon Fell got Moose Jaw on the board with a power play marker with 1:10 remaining in the second period and would add on his second goal, also on the man advantage, with 1:15 left in the game.
Landon McLellan and Connor Ruckaber drew assists on the first goal, Noah Osiowy the lone helper on the second.
Tayce Miller finished with two goals and five points for the Bruins, Conner Gardiner had a goal and four assists.
Jayden Watterson made 33 saves for Moose Jaw in 51 minutes of work, Landyn Maclachlan turned aside seven shots in the game’s first 8:46.
