Prairie Hockey Academy into consolation game at U16 Prairie Classic tournament

Cougars post 1-2 round robin record, to play winless Medicine Hat in fifth-sixth place contest on Sunday afternoon

The Prairie Hockey Academy will be playing in the consolation game at the Under-16 Prep Prairie Classic tournament on Sunday afternoon.

The Cougars put together a 1-2 record through the round robin in the six-team tournament, good enough for a fifth-place showing that put them just outside of the playoff round. As a result, the tournament hosts will face the Medicine Hat Hounds (0-3) in the consolation game at 1 p.m. at the Barkman Arena in Caronport.

PHA opened the event in style, taking a 3-1 win over Medicine Hat on Thursday, Nov. 17. Team leading scorer Henry Thunderblanket, Caleb DeBruyne and Kale Pratte scored the Cougars’ goals.

Prairie Hockey’s lone game on Friday saw the Cougars drop a 4-1 decision to the Airdrie, Alta.-based AC Havoc. Pratte scored the lone goal, DeBruyne was named PHA’s player of the game.

PHA closed out the round robin with a 5-0 loss to the Calgary Royals on Saturday afternoon. Goaltender Connor Millsap was Prairie Hockey’s player of the game after turning aside 43 shots in the loss.

Other scores from the weekend saw the Saskatoon River Kings defeat Medicine Hat 8-1, Calgary down Saskatoon 5-2, St. Albert Raiders edge Medicine Hat 2-0, Saskatoon roll to a 12-0 win over the Havoc, Calgary defeat St. Albert 2-0 and St. Albert sneak past the Havoc 4-3 in a shootout.

The semifinals are set for 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the Barkman Arena, with Calgary taking on the Havoc in the first game and Saskatoon duelling St. Albert in the second. The two semifinal winners will face off for the Prairie Classic championship at 3:30 p.m.
