Prairie Hearts Quilt Show a heartwarming success

Over 175 entries to this year's quilt show decorated the walls of the Exhibition Grounds on Friday and Saturday

The past weekend saw two buildings at the Exhibition Grounds decorated with over 175 beautifully crafted quilts and other quilted pieces, collected together for the 15th biannual Quilt Show hosted by the local quilter’s guild.

Prairie Hearts Quilters’ Guild president Colleen Lawrence was very pleased with the turnout for this year’s show; the guild judged quilts from as far away as Manitoba, and gave out around 80 prizes in around 30 categories.

“Oh, the quality of work — the judges had such a difficult time because everything is so well done. We have excellent quilters in Moose Jaw,” said Lawrence.

The show had a great number of people stop by to see the displays, shop the vendors, and enter for the Guild’s raffle quilt. The live demonstrations were popular, with a group of about 14 hand quilters working on a quilt-top with whoever would like to sit down and help.

“We have our featured quilters, which are our hand quilting group,” said Lawrence. “So they're quilting a quilt [right here]; people can come, sit down and quilt with them, watch what they're doing, ask them questions.”

The theme this year was “Everything Old is New Again,” and so many quilts featured old-style patterns done with a new eye.

“People just need to come and see what we can do. Anybody can quilt and we love to help people quilt. That's our aim, is to help people,” said Lawrence.
