A new community group dedicated to freedom and liberty wants pandemic-related health measures changed so people can choose how to protect themselves instead of the government imposing uniform regulations regardless of the situation.
The group also wants Moose Jaw’s school divisions to remove mask mandates from kids and teachers.
Action4Canada has 120 chapters across Canada and came into being in 2021. It focuses on family, freedom and faith, while its goal is to inform Canadians about their rights and freedoms.
The Moose Jaw chapter sprang up in mid-October and now includes more than 200 residents.
One of its first actions was to issue notices of liability in late November to Prairie South School Division and Holy Trinity Catholic Division. These documents were designed to force the organizations to cease with the mask orders and ensure that there is parental consent for on-site vaccinations, that people understand the vaccine’s ingredients and that everyone understands the potential side effects.
A video on the Action4Canada Facebook page shows the chapter leaders presenting documents to Ryan Boughen, director of education for Prairie South. He later confirmed that he received them and presented them to the board of education.
Ward Strueby, education director for Holy Trinity, also confirmed that the office received the notices of liability, which were then given to the board.
Group concerns
“Children need to still have all the interactions that they used to have. A mask takes a lot of their identity away, but it also takes away — at a younger level — really big learning opportunities,” group co-leader Jamie Olmstead said recently.
“They can no longer read lips when teachers are speaking or reading stories. It’s harder for them to hear sounds when they’re trying to learn them correctly,” she continued.
Forcing students to wear masks long-term is not helpful nor viable, especially since they have the right under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms to breathe fresh air, Olmstead added. The group also wants teachers to choose what’s personally right with masks and vaccines.
The research shows that children are not as affected by COVID-19 as adults are, so there’s no need to push vaccines on them when the long-term effects are unknown, added group co-leader Amanda Zentner.
Zentner pointed out that the liability notices have been effective since 22 school divisions across Canada have allegedly chosen not to enforce mask mandates because of the documents.
“It’s time to take pause and assess what our measures are doing for us. Is this the direction we need to go? … Or is it time to pivot and look for that new solution or other solution? Because there’s always another solution,” she said.
One solution is for sick people to stay home, even if they are vaccinated, Zentner continued. Canadians should be allowed to regulate themselves since there is no one-size-fits-all solution for everyone.
“Until people and parents start standing up, what we’re going through is just going to continue to happen. As soon as people start to voice (concerns), there seems to be a shift in the government,” she added.
The current health measures don’t give people much choice with taking or rejecting vaccines, either, said Olmstead. She pointed to federal law from 1997 that said immunization is not mandatory in Canada and cannot be made so since it would violate the Constitution.
Based on this law, everyone has the right to an education, a job, and the liberty to travel without needing to be vaccinated or show papers to cross borders, she stated.
Every mandate must therefore be legal and not violate the Charter. This is where the notices of liability come into play, Olmstead added, since they inform people of the laws they are allegedly breaking.
