The Moose Jaw Police Service is advising the public about an attempted scam that is being conducted over the phone.
Police have received multiple reports about a caller who is pretending to be the victim’s grandchild.
The caller indicates that they need money urgently and that the police will contact the victim.
Once some information has been obtained from the initial call, a second call is made to the victim by an individual who is impersonating a police officer. The scammer who is impersonating an officer then instructs the victim to withdraw a large amount of money and await further instructions.
The Moose Jaw Police Service would like to remind the public not to give personal information out over the phone.
If there is ever a question about the identity of a police officer on the phone, you are asked to phone the Moose Jaw Police Service at 306-694-7600 to confirm the authenticity of the call. It is advisable to ask for the officer’s name and badge number as well as record the date and time prior to phoning for confirmation.
