Be sure to put your phone away and stay focused.

Distracted driving is the focus of October’s Traffic Safety Spotlight. Police across the province will be looking for drivers who are not paying attention to the road.

Distracted driving contributed to 16 deaths and more than 4,500 collisions in Saskatchewan in 2019. As a reminder, distracted driving results in a $580 ticket and four demerit points for a first offence. Penalties increase for repeat offences.

On average, police across Saskatchewan have caught more than 500 distracted drivers every month this year.

Before you leave, SGI recommends turning off your phone notifications, setting your music playlist, and placing your phone out of reach, if possible. Aside from mobile phones, there are lots of other potential distractions while driving, including talking to passengers, pets, eating or drinking, smoking, and personal grooming.

Consider pulling over and taking care of distractions before continuing on your journey.
