It might be only a few games into the Moose Jaw High School Athletic Association girls basketball season, but the Peacock Toilers already look like a team with city championship potential.

The Toilers improved to 2-0 on the season on Tuesday night with a 67-33 victory over the Assiniboia Rockets in Assiniboia, while the Vanier Spirits improved to 1-1 with a 74-56 win over the Central Cyclones. Central fell to 1-2 with the loss, Assiniboia is now 0-2.

Peacock used a balanced attack to do their damage, with four players hitting double digits in offence. Devlynn McClung led the way with a 17-point outing, while Kylee Cooper scored 15 points, Mattaya Coupland put up 13 points and Hannah Miller 10.

Jenna Gronsdahl was Assiniboia’s top scorer with 10 points.

Vanier’s win over Central shows just how much parity there is in the league this season, making for an interesting run through the rest of the campaign.

Kate Waldenberger led the Spirits with 18 points, while Waverly Demassi and Feona Tolentino put up 16 each.

Ava Nichols was Central’s top scorer with an 18-point outing of her own, while Addison Simpson scored 12, Molly McLean added 11 and Lucy McLean scored 10.

No score was reported from the high school boys game between Peacock and Vanier.

Girls league action continues on Thursday, with the Lumsden Angels facing Assiniboia at Riverview in Moose Jaw. Tip off is 5:50 p.m.
