Peacock, Central victorious to open football season

Vanier falls to defending champion Yorkton as new high school campaign underway

The Moose Jaw High School Football League season kicked off with a slate of road games on Saturday, with local squads picking up wins in two of the three contests.

The Central Cyclones opened their quest to return to the league championship final with a 35-30 victory over the Swift Current Colts. Cyclones running back Ryan Vincent led the Central offence with 26 carries for 223 yards.

The Peacock Tornadoes also opened with a victory, taking a 27-7 win over the Estevan Elecs.

The news wasn’t quite so good for the Vanier Vikings against the defending league champion Yorkton Raiders, as the Raiders rolled to a 42-3 win in their annual Friday Night Lights game.

Further scoring information from the weekend wasn’t immediately available.

League play continues Thursday as Peacock travels to Swift Current, Friday when Estevan takes on the Weyburn Eagles and Saturday in the league’s home opener between Vanier and Central. Game time is 1 p.m. at Gutheridge Field.In girls soccer action in Swift Current, the 11-time defending Moose Jaw high school girls soccer league champion Ardens opened the season with a pair of 4-1 victories over the Weyburn Eagles.
