One man dead after multi-vehicle accident near Chaplin

A multiple-vehicle accident near Chaplin, Sask. yesterday has left one individual dead, one with minor injuries

A 22-year-old man from Calgary is dead after a multi-vehicle collision on Highway 1 near Chaplin, Sask. yesterday.

Morse RCMP responded to the collision at approximately 2 p.m. on Monday, which occurred about four kilometres west of Chaplin in the westbound lanes of the highway.

Eight vehicles were involved in the accident, including five tractor-trailer semi units, a large cube van, a truck and a passenger van. RCMP said that the passenger van and a semi collided initially and then a second semi collided with the first. Three more semis and the two vans then collided with the first vehicles.

The driver of the second semi was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was the lone occupant of the vehicle. One other occupant from another semi suffered minor injuries.

RCMP, the Herbert Fire Department, Moose Jaw paramedics and the Saskatchewan Coroners Service attended the scene.

Traffic in the area is still being diverted, as RCMP are investigating the scene with a collision reconstructionist.
