With Chinese New Year being the most important annual event for some of Moose Jaw’s Asian residents, the community’s new Chinese organization plans to hold a supper gala to celebrate.

The Moose Jaw Chinese Association Inc. — not to be confused with the original Chinese association, now the Moose Jaw Chinese Community Network — will hold a New Year’s celebration at Lin’s Café on Athabasca Street East on Sunday, Jan. 22 to welcome the Year of the Rabbit.

The organization’s board of directors will bring greetings to residents as part of the festivities.

“From Canadian and Chinese food cuisine to celebrating (activities), we hope to bring more awareness for seniors’ wellness and lifestyle in Moose Jaw’s future,” said president Wei Qi.

“As our long-term sponsor, Moose Multimedia is delighted to continually share the prospective Prairie voice of Canadian Chinese and is happy to invite (everyone) to join the journey.”

The association was founded as a non-profit charitable organization that focused on community volunteerism, she continued. The group has worked with the Moose Jaw Public Library to offer seniors’ wellness programs, such as free Tai Chi activities and bilingual conversation hubs for new immigrants.

Meanwhile, it has demonstrated Chinese culture and traditions at elementary schools and a seniors’ centre, such as dumplings and Tai Chi health activities.

The non-profit group noticed there was an opportunity in the community to engage with seniors and address their health and wellness, which is why the group has chosen to focus on that area and potentially offer programming, said Qi.

“During the pandemic outbreak, our association and individuals donated to the COVID-19 emergency fund at (the) Moose Jaw Health Foundation to support more lives,” she added. “We look forward to resuming our volunteer program with the city at the Moose Jaw Public Library and other organizations this year … post-pandemic.”
