The Moose Jaw Mustangs 1 put together a solid weekend in the South Sask Lacrosse League U11 championship this past weekend in Moose Jaw, and now have a silver medal to show for it.
The Mustangs took a 9-6 victory over the QCMBL Junior Heat in the semifinal on Sunday morning before dropping a 14-3 decision to the powerhouse QCMBL Reapers in the gold medal game.
Earlier in the day, the Mustangs 1 had the unenviable task of eliminating their Mustangs 2 brethren in the ‘B’ side final, taking a 7-5 victory.
QCMBL Reapers 14, Mustangs 1 3
Queen City came into the tournament with an undefeated record and more than 80 goals to the positive in their goal differential, and it showed on the floor throughout the weekend.
The final was no different, as the Reapers took a 6-1 lead out of the first period and led 12-1 through two.
Stanley Jameson, Noel Nelson and Kipton Tremblay scored for Moose Jaw.
Paxton Nelson had six goals and eight points to lead the Reapers offence.
Mustangs 1 9, QCMBL Heat 6
The Heat took a 4-2 lead out of the first period, but the Mustangs scored five unanswered goals in the second to take a 7-4 edge before booking their spot in the final.
Jameson had an impressive game with five goals, while Tremblay scored twice and finished with three points. Winston Jameson had a goal and an assist, Kayden Howes had their other marker.
Mustangs 1 7, Mustangs 2 5
Much like would happen in the semifinal, the Mustangs 1 got off to a slow start and trailed 1-0 after the first.
Four straight goals in the latter half of the second period would give them a 4-3 lead, though, and after the Mustangs 2 scored a pair to take the lead early in the third, the Mustangs 1 rallied for three goals in the final 3:50 of the game to put things away.
It was Tremblay’s turn for a big game with five goals, while Stanley Jameson had a goal and an assist and Winston Jameson added their other marker.
Joshua Arnold scored twice for the Mustangs 2, Jax Throssell, Sterling Stewart and Bennett Dunlop had their other markers.
The Mustangs 1 opened the tournament with a 13-8 win over the Weyburn Thrashers 2 before falling 10-8 to the Junior Heat. They won their next contest 12-6 over the Thrashers 1 to set up their all-Moose Jaw meeting.
The Mustangs 2 took a similar path to the ‘B’ final -- a 7-1 win over the Thrashers 1, 9-2 loss to the QCMBL Reapers and 10-7 win over the Thrashers 2.
