The Moose Jaw Canucks are off to the start they were hoping for in the Baseball Regina Mosquito AA league.

After winning their opener at the beginning of the month in walk-off fashion, the 11-and-under squad followed with a pair of lopsided victories last week, rolling to a 15-0 win over the White Butte Broncos on July 14 before following with a 28-7 romp over the Regina Pacers on July 16.

They’re back in action Tuesday night when they travel to Regina for a rematch with the Pacers.

Canucks 15, White Butte 0

You don’t see many shut-outs in Mosquito-aged baseball, but that’s what Max Craig, Grady Johnstone, Mac Sowden and Reid Weiss were able to put together in their second game of the season.

Craig got the start and was all but untouchable, holding the Broncos without a hit or walk and striking out all six batters he faced in two innings of work. Johnstone was nearly his equal, striking out four before Mac Sowden tossed a perfect fifth, striking out three. Weiss gave up the only hits of the game in the sixth inning as a pair of White Butte hitters reached, but he was able to shut the door and maintain the shutout.

Things were just as positive at the plate, as lead-off hitter Jackson Jennett would go 3-for-3 with three runs scored and four runs batted in.

Ramsey Thompson also had a solid contest with a 2-for-3 showing that also saw him knock in four, including a home run. Luke Pratte was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI; Johnstone 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.

Canucks 28, Pacers 7

As the score would indicate, the Canucks took control of the contest early and never looked back, scoring six runs in each of the first three innings before putting up a four-spot in the fourth and adding another six runs in the fifth. All told, they’d crank out 26 hits while holding Regina to only four.

Every Canucks batter had at least one hit and knocked in a run, with the top of their order doing the most damage: Craig went 4-for-4 with four runs and four RBI, Jaxson Weston 4-for-5 with four runs and four RBI to go along with a 4-for-4 night from Pratte, who also crossed the plate three times and knocked in four.

Sowden and James Howe also had three hits and three RBI each.

With that much run support, the Canucks pitchers simply went out and got the job done.

Thompson got the start and gave up a run while striking out six in two innings before Sam Gaucher gave up a hit and struck out three in a scoreless third. Howe surrendered five runs on two hits and five walks before Cruz Schwabe closed things out, striking out a pair and giving up a run in the final inning.
