More water main breaks occurred in Q2 2022 than 2021, report shows

City hall tackled 16 water main breaks between April 1 and June 30, compared to 11 breaks during the same period last year, a recent council report said.

Statistics from the second quarter for the public works and utilities department show there were more water main breaks in those months than last year and more breaks year-to-date than last year.

The department tackled 16 water main breaks between April 1 and June 30, compared to 11 breaks during the same period last year, a recent council report said. Meanwhile, there were 37 water breaks during the first six months of this year compared with 32 last year.

Recycling

City hall diverted 12 per cent of all solid waste from the landfill to recycling during the second quarter, compared to 12.3 per cent diverted to recycling in Q2 2021, the report said. 

The total amount of recycling acquired from bulk and curbside was 342,740 kilograms, of which 331,553 kgs were allowed. In comparison, those numbers were 355,176 kgs and 341,666 kgs, respectively, for Q2 2021.

Landfill

The municipal landfill accepted a total of 4.6-per-cent less material in Q2 2022 versus Q2 2021. This included 4.3-per-cent less in residential material and 22.3-per-cent less in private material, although commercial collection was 1.9-per-cent higher, the report showed.

The total amount of landfill garbage collected from the three streams was 11,233.57 tonnes, compared to 11,779.2 tonnes during Q2 2021. 

Sewer and water

City hall treated 253.41 million imperial gallons of wastewater from April 1 to June 30, compared to 246 million imperial gallons during the same period last year.

Meanwhile, the municipality treated 298.03 million imperial gallons of water pumped during those three months, compared to 310.8 million imperial gallons during the same period last year.

Transit

There were 35,482 people who rode the bus during the second quarter, which was an average of 565 people for one-way trips per day, the council report said. 

Meanwhile, 8,959 people used paratransit during those three months, compared to 4,301 people who took paratransit during the same period last year. 

City hall sold 667 bus passes in Q2 of this year, compared to 371 passes sold in Q2 2021.
