Moose Jaw’s Robson posts dominant win to open women’s club curling provincials

Former champion rolls to 12-2 victory over Regina Callie’s Kenaschuk in opening game Friday

Moose Jaw’s Elaine Robson is in action at the Curl Sask women's club provincial championships this weekend.

Now that’s how you kick off a provincial curling championship.

The Moose Jaw Curling Centre rink of Elaine Robson, third Candace Newkirk, second Rebecca Venn and lead Sheri Logan got off to a great start at the Curl Sask women’s club curling provincial championship on Thursday night, rolling to a 12-2 win over Regina’s Patty Kenaschuk at the Callie in Regina.

The club curling championship is an event designed for teams that mostly play a bonspiel and intra-club schedule, with special rules in place to create an even and fair playing field.

Things were close in the early going between Robson and Kenaschuk, as a deuce in the second end gave the Regina foursome a 2-1 lead.

Things changed dramatically the next end, though. Robson scored three to take the lead and then went on a tear of steals, taking one in the fourth and another two in the fifth before finishing things off with a five-ender in the sixth.

The event follows a triple-knockout format, with Robson’s next game on the ‘A’ side set for 2 p.m. Saturday against North Battleford’s Kristi Frolek.

Tournament action continues throughout the weekend, with the semifinals at 1:30 p.m. and final at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Regina Callie.

Finding success at the women’s club provincial championship is far from unusual for Moose Jaw Curling Centre teams.

Robson, Newkirk and Logan most recently won the title in 2021 and also claimed the championship in 2018. Newkirk skipped a foursome to gold in 2015, and Patricia Yeske claimed provincials in 2011.

Robson’s opponent Friday afternoon has also seen success in the event, as Frolek won it all in 2017.
