Ethan Peters, here in action against current Moose Jaw Warriors' Brett Mirwald goaltender last season, picked up his first WHL point this past weekend.
With the kind of offence the Edmonton Oil Kings showed through their first two games of the season, it seemed like only a matter of time before Moose Jaw Minor Hockey product Ethan Peters officially hit the scoresheet.

That time came on Saturday night.

Peters, a 17-year-old rookie with the Oil Kings, picked up the first point of his Western Hockey League career in Edmonton’s 7-2 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

The former Prairie Hockey Academy defenceman drew an assist on his team’s sixth goal at the 5:23 mark of the third, with his wrist shot from the point redirecting off the backboards and straight to Liam Keeler, who put a quick shot into the wide-open net behind Hurricanes goaltender Bryan Thomson.

A couple hours later, it was former AAA Warriors forward Jaxsen Wiebe’s turn to get on the board with the Red Deer Rebels.

Wiebe, 18 and in his second season with Red Deer, scored his first goal of the campaign with 4:22 gone in the third as the Rebels dropped a 7-2 decision to the Medicine Hat Tigers. Defenceman Chase Leslie took a shot from the point that Wiebe redirected, sending the bouncing puck past the Tigers’ Garin Bjorklund.

The WHL also announced the Player and Goaltender of the Week for the opening slate of games on Monday.

Dylan Guenther from the Oil Kings took Player of the Week honours after putting up four goals and eight points in two games against Lethbridge, while Edmonton goaltender Sebastian Cossa was named Goaltender of the Week for the two wins, including a 1.50 goals against average and .935 save percentage.

WHL action continues in the Central Division this weekend as Medicine Hat takes on Edmonton and Red Deer faces Calgary in a pair of home-and-home sets Friday and Saturday.
