Moose Jaw’s Gerritt Gulutzan wins bronze in Regina

Gulutzan and Team Saskatchewan won bronze at the 2023 Baseball Canada Cup in Regina

Moose Jaw’s own Gerritt Gulutzan won bronze while representing Team Saskatchewan at the 2023 Baseball Canada Cup in Regina.

The bronze medal standing was earned after taking down Quebec with a 1 – 0 walk-off win. The game was a thrill and Saskatoon’s Boston Bast hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 7th inning to win the medal for Team Saskatchewan.

Team Saskatchewan finished with bronze and a 4 – 5 record overall, and British Columbia won silver. Ontario defeated BC to score gold after climbing back from a 5 – 0 lead in the top of the first inning to win it 11 – 8.

Gold medal or not, Saskatchewan’s baseball clubs are benefiting from being the national focus and all eyes were on the province for the tournament. “It’s nice to finally show off what we have,” said Cam Marshak, an athlete playing for Team Saskatchewan.

The team’s head coach, Greg Brons, viewed the opportunity to host as being very positive. “It’s special for us because we like to play in front of our friends and family in Regina, and it’s good not to get on a plane and deal with the headaches of travel,” he said. For Gulutzan and his family, this meant playing on more familiar territory and the ability for more of his fans and family to offer support in the crowd.

The tournament saw 10 provincial all-star teams compete at the Optimist Park in Regina, and this included Canada’s best U17 baseball talent. The championships were held between Aug. 9 – 13.

Of note, Gulutzan was the recipient of the Baseball Sask 2022 Minor Player of the Year award. Baseball Sask is a non-profit organization serving as a governing body for amateur baseball in the province.
