Moose Jaw’s Leighton Bearchell finished in 10th place in the Saskatchewan Mid-Amateur Men’s Golf Championship.
Leighton Bearchell made a steady climb up the leaderboard throughout the Saskatchewan Mid-Amateur Men’s golf championship this past week, and now he’s been rewarded with a top-10 finish.

And as well as he played in carding a one-under 71 to finish four-over at The Legends Golf Course in Warman, things could have been even better.

Bearchell, 25, tore through the front nine in style, taking birdie on the 541-yard par-five fourth hole and following with one-unders on the 533-yard par-five sixth and 168-yard par-three sixth. A bogey on eight was the only black spot on the opening nine, and he hit the turn two-under for the round.

Another birdie on a par five, this one the 529-yard 12th, dropped Bearchell to three-under for the day, but disaster struck on the very next hole: a double bogey that spoiled a spectacular round and a potential top-five showing. The former provincial junior champion was able to rebound in style, though, reeling off five straight pars to close out his one-under for the round.

It was three straight days of improvement, as Bearchell carded a 75 to open the tournament Tuesday and a 74 in round two.

Prince Albert’s Danny Klughart emerged with the tournament win after an astonishing 10-under-par 62 saw him roar past the leaders and take a seven-shot win over North Battleford’s Scott Thompson at 11-under-par for the week.

Next up will be the final round of the 109th annual Men’s Amateur, where Bearchell sits in a three-way tie for 19th with Deer Valley’s Cole Obrigewitsch and Saskatoon’s Josh Nagy.

Klughart and Saskatoon’s Ty Campbell are tied for the lead at 11-under.

The Women’s Amateur championship was taking place at the same time at The Legends, and saw 15-year-old Brooklin Fry of Shell Lake card a final-round 73 to win by six strokes over perennial contender Kathy Ziglo of Saskatoon.

Fry also become the first player in 10 years to win both the junior provincial and women’s provincial title in the same season, with Anna Young having done the same in 2010.
