Students across Moose Jaw and Caronport will be switching to remote learning next week, due to ongoing concerns about rising variants.

In a letter posted to social media, Tony Baldwin, director of education for Prairie South School Division (PSSD), said the change is necessary.

"We have done a really good job of ensuring that COVID transmission at school doesn't happen," he wrote. "Unfortunately, we have a very challenging situation in some of our communities that is impacting our ability to continue with face-to-face learning."

PSSD board chair Robert Bachmann added that the number of cases is rising.

"We have had as many cases in the last two days in Moose Jaw and Caronport as we have had in the entire school division the month before."

The plan is to return to the classroom on April 12.

The change will affect PSSD students as of Monday, March 29.

Students in Holy Trinity Catholic School Division (HTCSD) will also be moving online.

Sean Chase, director of education for HTCSD, wrote "We recognize the challenges this presents for our families and thank you for your understanding of our rationale. We believe this challenge is aligned with our ongoing priority of student and staff safety."

Holy Trinity students in Moose Jaw will move to level 4/remote learning from Tuesday, March 30 to Thursday, April 1. There is no school scheduled for Monday, March 29.

The decision to move to remote learning was made after consultation with public health officials.
