Moose Jaw region unemployment lowest in Saskatchewan

The Swift-Current Moose Jaw labour region has the lowest unemployment rate in the province.

Unemployment in the region at year end was 3.9 per cent, a reduction from four per cent in 2018, according to the Statistics Canada Labour Survey.

The reduced unemployment came even with a five per cent increase in the labour force during 2018 to 53,600.

The participation rate in the region’s labour force climbed to 69.5 per cent from 65.5 per cent, indicating more people sought and found work than one year ago.

The Yorkton-Melville region had the second lowest unemployment rate at 4.8 per cent, up from 3.9 per cent a year ago.

Highest unemployment rate among the six regions was 5.7 per cent in the Prince Albert Northern, a reduction from seven per cent in 2018.

The Saskatchewan unemployment rate fell from 5.3 per cent to 5.1 per cent while the labour force grew just under one per cent to 613,800.

The Canadian unemployment rate was the same as one year ago at 5.2 per cent while the labor force increased 1.9 per cent to 19.14 million people.
