The Moose Jaw Police Service will be on hand at the Freedom Rally set to take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon near Sunningdale School.

The event-- which is promoted by organizers on Facebook as an open and transparent debate with the goal of having “their government respect and honour the Charter” of Rights and Freedoms -- is expected to feature convoys of participants from Saskatoon, Regina and Weyburn.

Organizers also specifically pointed out the event is not an anti-mask rally.

Similar events in the province’s two largest cities saw hundreds of participants.

“The Moose Jaw Police Service recognizes the right to peaceful assembly and the responsibility of participants in assemblies to comply with all laws, including the current Public Health Order,” the media release said. “Police will be in attendance at the gathering to promote community safety and the well-being of participants.

“The Moose Jaw Police Service thanks everyone in our community for working together to keep each other safe and healthy during this pandemic.”

The current Public Health Order allows for public and private outdoor gatherings of up to 10 persons, with all in attendance maintaining two metres distance between households, although exceptions exist for outdoor recreation areas such as skating rinks where 30 people can gather as long as two metres of distance can be maintained between households.

The event is unaffiliated with Sunningdale School itself, with Prairie South School Division director of education Tony Baldwin saying on Twitter that Prairie South has nothing to do with the event and they're working with city police to make sure everyone stays safe.
