The Moose Jaw Carpet One U13 Mavericks are off to the next round of the playoffs after finishing off a sweep of the Swift Current Colts White on Thursday night.
The Mavericks scored a pair of goals in each of the first two periods and went on to a 5-3 victory in Swift Current in Game 2, sweeping the best-of-three Sask Female Hockey League second-round series.
Moose Jaw will now await the winner of the series between the Davidson Huskies and Swift Current Colts Black, with Davidson holding a 1-0 lead after taking a 3-1 victory in Game 1.
Madeline Hopkinson and Sophia Page scored for the Mavericks in the first period of their deciding game before Hopkinson and Atlee Feifer added second-period markers for a 4-1 lead.
Goals from Swift Current’s Georgia Unger and Jessa Peesker -- the latter with 3:13 to play -- made for an interesting finish, but Taya Babich would score an empty net goal with 14 seconds to play to finish things off.
Kamri Silbernagel had the Colts’ other goal.
Blair Bennet picked up the win in goal, while Emily Green took the loss for the Colts.
The Mavericks now play the waiting game, with their second-round series slated to start on Mar. 4.
