The U15 Mavericks picked up a 2-1 victory over the Estevan Bruins in their first game, while the U13 squad settled for a 2-2 draw with the Weyburn Goldwings.
The U13 Mavericks were back on the ice Saturday for a rematch with Weyburn, while the U15 team was set to host Estevan on Sunday, although that contest is in jeopardy due to the blizzard warning over southern Saskatchewan.
U15 Mavericks 2, Estevan 1Allison Duncan scored the game-winning goal on the power play with 7:12 remaining in the third period and Sara Umana turned in a solid showing in net as the Mavericks won their opener in Estevan.
Danika Tonge scored Moose Jaw’s first goal of the season at the 14:13 mark of the first period, but the Bruins would come back to tie things with a shorthanded marker in the second.
Moose Jaw had their penalty kill to largely thank for the outcome, as they killed off a total of 10 penalties without allowing a power-play goal. The Mavericks themselves were 1-for-8.
U13 Mavericks 2, Weyburn 2The Mavericks opener in Weyburn turned into a back-and-forth contest that saw three goals scored in the second period, but neither club could find the game winner in the final frame.
Weyburn took a 1-0 lead out of the first period, but Chase Street would tie things on the power play at the 14:44 markof the second.
Tayler Smith would then put the Mavericks ahead just over a minute later, but the 2-1 lead would only last a little more than three minutes before the Gold Wings once again tied the game.
Calie Bell was in goal for the Mavericks, who finished the game 1-for-3 on the power play and killed off all four Weyburn man-advantage attempts.
