Moose Jaw figure skaters finish in top 15 at Canada Winter Games

Nimegeers, Team Sask to face Nova Scotia in quarterfinal Friday night; judo competitors prepare for team competition Saturday

A pair of local figure skaters are coming home with top-15 finishes from the Saskatchewan Winter Games in Prince Edward Island.

Moose Jaw’s Eric Swalm and Brownlee ‘s Rowan Gray skated in the Pre-Novice Male free program on Thursday night, finishing 12th and 13th overall respectively. 

Moose Jaw Skating Club competitor Swalm put down a score of 36.95 in his free program, and combined with his 21.94 in the short program on Tuesday, finished with 57.89 total.

Gray recorded a 36.13 in his free skate, with a 19.86 short program giving him 55.99 points.

Ontario’s Rui Quinn followed up his stellar short program with 67.92 points in the free, putting up 112.22 points total to claim the gold medal. B.C.’s Louie Fukuda-Wu claimed silver with 106.02 points and Alberta’s Travis Trang won bronze with 101.87 points.


Brooklyn Nimegeers and Team Saskatchewan are back in action Friday night when they take on Nova Scotia in their quarter-final match-up.

Saskatchewan finished the round robin with a 1-2 record, losing their opener 11-1 to B.C. and falling 4-2 to Quebec before winning their final preliminary round game 3-2 over New Brunswick to book their spot in the medal round.

Nimegeers, 17,  has a goal and three points to lead Team Sask in scoring.


The local slate of judo competitors will be in action in the team competition on Saturday.
Moose Jaw Koseikan Judo Club competitor Avery Gibney had the top showing in the individual competition, reaching one of the female 52 kg bronze medal matches before finishing in sixth place, while Koseikan teammate Kolbi Fenrick ran into a pair of medalists and was 0-2 in the female 57 kg class.

Avonhurst Judo Club competitor Paxton Nelson was 1-2 and reached the bronze semifinal.
