Moose Jaw Family Services will be giving free clothing to those in need

The giveaway will take place this Thursday, Sept. 21, and Friday, Sept. 22 and items are available free of charge

Moose Jaw Family Services Inc. (MJFS) will be giving away free clothing this week, thanks to a surplus of donations from a very generous community.

The clothing giveaway will take place at MJFS’ building on both Thursday, Sept. 21 and Friday, Sept. 22. Anyone in need of these items is welcome to stop by and everything is provided free of charge.

Clothing is available for all ages from infant to adult, and there’s a wide selection so everyone is included. Due to a large number of donated items, volunteers at MJFS had to build some additional storage space just to make room for everything.

MJFS is mindful that winter is fast approaching, and the organization has made sure that its inventory includes some warm winter boots and other winter clothing for those in need as the seasons change.

There’s also a wide assortment of small household items. “We also have some small household things like toys, drink bottles… and (other) small household needs,” said executive director Tara Jones.

“It all depends on what kind of donations we get, so we can’t guarantee what we’ll have.”

Everything that the MJFS is giving back to the community has been donated to the organization.

Donations are brought in by a wide number of local individuals, and the organization also has around 30 regular volunteers who help support the donation process. By providing these essential goods free of charge, the items are more likely to reach those who need them most.

“Everything that comes to us is through donations,” explained Jones. “We then put it together and open our doors for anyone from the community to come and find anything that they might need.”

Thanks to the successful drive this spring, and a high amount of interest for the upcoming drive, Jones is planning to continue with the idea.

“We did one in the spring as well, and we’re planning on continuing to do two a year — one in the spring and one in the fall. This will be our second,” she said, noting that the idea came after receiving a larger than average number of items this year.

If the plan works out, the MJFS’ next giveaway will be scheduled for a date in April 2024.

“Moose Jaw Family Services is a non-profit organization that is here to serve our community,” Jones explained. “We provide counselling opportunities everywhere from free to very affordable rates, depending on referral sources. We also offer parenting programs and parenting support groups, including the young parent program and independent learning skills.”

“We want to make sure the community knows how much we appreciate them. We receive a lot of donations from the community, both in terms of clothing and household needs, but also the donations that our community makes to help us run our programs,” she said.

“We always want to express our thanks to our community members.”

You can help support MJFS in its efforts to improve our community by donating any items you no longer need to the drop-off location during regular business hours. MJFS is open seven days a week between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
