Moose Jaw competitors finish in medals at Bantam District badminton championship

Cornerstone’s Hrechka lone division winner as top players in South Central District do battle

The deeper the South Central District Athletic Association high school badminton season goes, the more parity you’re going to find among schools as more and more of the sport’s top athletes work into the fold.

That was especially on display during the SCDAA District Bantam Championships at Peacock on Saturday morning.

Athletes from five different schools ended up winning gold medals at the event, offering an idea of just how balanced things are in badminton in Moose Jaw and area.

Bantam girls city champion Kiana Hrechka was the only big city winner, as the Cornerstone Christian School competitor took gold ahead of Mossbank’s Dasha Zabalotnia and bronze medalist Leah Crossland from Vanier.

Boys singles saw Rouleau’s Chase Faris claim the title ahead of Peacock’s Allan Lu, with Cornerstone’s Nolan Novak third.

Glentworth’s Rylan Poirier and Kohan Blake emerged with the boys doubles title, finishing ahead of Cornerstone’s Drew Biette and Tanner Behns for gold. Gravelbourg’s Manny Pagan and Ayden Jacobs were the bronze medalists.

The girls doubles title went to Cenny Osiowy and Taryn Friesen from Caronport Elementary, with a pair of Gravelbourg teams taking the silver and bronze medals: Nicole Cagura and Samantha Blohm finished second, Rilynn Chandler and Maeva Potie took third.

Gravelbourg also found success in mixed doubles, with Madeline Simonsen and McCoy Munteanu winning gold while Glentworth’s Owen Okraincee and Addyson Okraincee emerged with silver. Arlyn Dequina and Josh Abanes were the bronze medalists.
