The Moose Jaw Wildlife Federation will be hosting its 6th annual Youth and Family Ice Fishing Tournament on March 10th at Buffalo Pound Provincial Park.
Fishing runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with prizes to follow. There will also be a BBQ lunch provided courtesy of Hub Meats.
“We started the tournament as a way to encourage families to get out and enjoy the sport of ice fishing, learn about conservation and participate in a fun tournament,” said Todd Smith at the Wildlife Federation.
Participants are divided by age into either youth (2-15 years old) or adult (ages 16+) categories. The participants can win prizes from sponsors in each of the categories.
Smith says participants will need their own fishing equipment and a five-gallon bucket to transport their catch to the measuring tent.
“We also encourage participants to bring a shelter (tent or shack), depending on the weather, and snacks to keep the young anglers happy on the ice. For the tournament, all holes are pre-drilled by our volunteers,” said Smith.
The University of Regina Fish Lab will also be on site to tag fish for a fisheries study taking place at Buffalo Pound.
Those wishing to participate can contact the Wildlife Federation at [email protected] with the names and ages of anglers to be registered.
You can also register on the ice Sunday morning starting at 8:30 a.m.
Smith thanked sponsors for their contribution towards the family fun event.
“We would like to thank our volunteers and sponsors for making this event a success. Special thanks goes out to Hub Meats, Curly's Baits, PK Lures, Cabela's Regina, Mosaic Belle Plaine, and Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation for their support.”
