With several board members set to retire this year, the Moose Jaw Minor Basketball Association (MJMBA) has decided to shut down the organization and move on.

The association announced its “difficult decision” during a recent post to its social media page.

“We are confident that a new basketball league will be developed in the future, as other groups have already shown interest. We look forward to what their new ideas and passion for the sport will provide for our youth,” the board said.

The association thanked the coaches and officials who had contributed over the years and past board members who made the league possible. It also thanked Prairie South School Division for its contributions to the league.

“It has been an absolute pleasure watching our city’s youth grow in this sport,” the board added. “We thank you, our MJMBA family, for your support and wish you all the best in the future!”

One group that appears interested and committed to hosting a community basketball league is Golden Ticket Sports Inc., which took over operations of the former Hillcrest Sports Centre in 2021 and installed a modern hardwood court in the now-named Golden Ticket Sports Centre.

“Running a league has many moving parts, many of which are not known to those in the general public. MJMBA has done a fantastic job in their time running youth basketball in our city,” Tanner Brightman, co-owner of Golden Ticket Sports, said in an email.

“Golden Ticket Sports wishes to build off of the work done by MJMBA starting in the fall of 2023. Golden Ticket Sports will be running a league and programming to support the growth of the sport in the city of Moose Jaw.

“Stay tuned for further information.”
