Heading into their contest with the Weyburn Beavers on Sunday night, the Moose Jaw Miller Express are once again one of the hottest teams in the Western Canadian Baseball League.
The Express picked up their WCBL-best fourth-straight win by taking an 11-7 victory over the Swift Current 57’s in Swift Current on Sunday night in game two of their doubleheader, after winning 12-10 in the opener.
The victory saw Moose Jaw improve to 24-15 on the season, good enough for a two-game lead over the Regina Red Sox for first place in the East Division.
And much like they did in their opening win on Saturday, the Express showed all sorts of power in getting the job done.
Luke Shekeryk had the big bat on the night, hitting a three-run home run in the first inning and finishing his day 3-for-5 with two doubles, four runs batted in and a run scored.
Moose Jaw would need all of that offence, too, as both teams were scoring early, leading to a 6-6 draw through three innings. The Millers broke things open in the fifth, though, with a two-run single off the bat of Cam Grant the key hit in a three-run outburst that gave Moose Jaw the lead for good.
Nate Mensik added his second home run in as many games in the seventh, a two-run shot that gave him a league-leading eight round-trippers this season, He finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
Zach Campbell also had a solid night at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three runs and an RBI.
Triston Seitz got the start on the mound and allowed five runs on four hits in an inning of work, but the Express bullpen was solid from there. Livio Bundi allowed a single run and struck out three in two innings, Jesse Scholtz pitched three scoreless innings and ended up with the win, Reece Helland tossed the seventh and allowed a run on three hits.
After their match-up with Weyburn on Sunday, the Express are back home to face the Medicine Hat Tigers in a doubleheader on Tuesday night. First pitch for game one is 5:05 p.m., and your ticket gives you entry to both games.
