Midget Mustangs cruise to win over Regina Inferno

Nichols scores four, Williams pots a pair as Mustangs take 8-2 win
The Moose Jaw Mustangs set the tone right off the opening face-off in their South Saskatchewan Lacrosse League Midget division home opener against the Regina Inferno.

Kael Nichols picked up the ball off the opening draw, went down the floor and scored the Mustangs’ first goal only 13 seconds into the contest.

It was clear sailing from there, as the Mustangs built a 4-0 lead after the first on their way to an 8-2 victory at Mosaic Place.

“We had a pretty good offence, our defence was pretty good and we played with emotion, a lot of teamwork,” said Moose Jaw’s Blake Butler when asked what his team’s key to success was.

Nichol’s goal was one of four for him on the night, while Jake Williams added a pair as the Mustangs built a 5-0 lead through two periods and didn’t surrender a goal until 9:19 of the third.

That kind of defensive effort was all according to plan as the Mustangs made sure there would be no miraculous comebacks on the night.

“You can’t really relax because that’s how they start to score,” Butler said. “You have to keep up your pace and keep going the whole time…. We didn’t do to bad at that, they just had some lucky goals from way outside.”

Brydon Bell scored the Mustangs’ other goal and added two assists, while Kirk Mullen also picked up a pair of helpers.

It’s been a solid start to the season for the local squad, with a tournament win in Swift Current and victories in their first two league contests. So can they keep the roll going?

“Oh yeah, for sure,” Butler said. “I think we’re going to be one of the top teams in the league, we have lots of good players and lots of skill.”

The Mustangs are back in action May 8 when they travel to Weyburn to face the Thrashers.
