Mavericks win battle against league leader

The win moves Moose Jaw two points closer to Unity in the Saskatchewan Female Hockey League U13A west division.

It was the battle between the league’s two top teams.

And for the fans who showed up the game did not disappoint.

On Saturday the Moose Jaw U13A Carpet One Mavericks 2 faced off against Western Prairie Unity in what was a battle that in all likelihood could decide the Saskatchewan Female Hockey League's U13A western division's regular season champion.

Moose Jaw aggressively chased the puck and won the game 3 - 1 despite the efforts of Unity's goalie Ashlyn Brown.

The Mavericks would pressure Western Prairie in the First Period.

The Mavericks had Unity's goalie beaten only to have the shot go off the post.

The Mavericks opened the scoring later in the period when Taya Babich scored at the 4:52 mark. The assist went to Mannie Bushko.

The Second Period saw Babich score her second of the game at the 14:21 mark with the assist going to Willow Scott.

Unity managed to get on the scoreboard with 8 seconds left in the period.

Chloe Dean would rush in and score an unassisted marker for Unity.

Moose Jaw led 2 - 1 at the second intermission ice cleaning.

The Third Period would see the Mavericks score their third putting the game out of reach for Western Prairie.

Maddie Hopkinson would pick up a pass with a couple of steps on Unity's defence and flick the puck into open blocker side of the net.

The time of the goal was 13:52.

The assist went to Evelyn Stokes.
