Letter to the Editor: Short Business Hours at City Hall

A letter to the editor from A.W. Allan

I’m looking for an answer to what I thought was a simple question. On April 10, 2024, through the City of Moose Jaw web site, I sent emails to the City Manager, the Mayor and each Council member. The site acknowledged my correspondence, but I have not gotten a response from anyone.

Perhaps you may be able to help me out. Here’s a copy of my letter:

I am writing to inquire about the office hours of the City of Moose Jaw.

Recently some of my friends mentioned they went to City Hall but were unable to do their business because the office didn’t open until 10 a.m.

I wondered if the City was still on COVID hours or if it had reduced staff hours. Perhaps you could enlighten me on why the hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Seems the City is not really there to serve the needs of people who need access to City Hall.

I checked around the province. Swift Current hours are 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Estevan and the Town of Hudson Bay are open 9 to 5. Saskatoon 8 to 5. Regina City Hall operates 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Weyburn and Prince Albert open 8 to 4:30 in the afternoon. North Battleford is open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. In White City and Yorkton business hours are from 8 to 4.

This leads me to wonder if the City of Moose Jaw is open for business and to serve the needs of its residents? Not everyone can get to City Hall to do business during 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Many people, in fact most, work outside these hours.

I would love to get the rationale for these hours of operation.
