Letter to the Editor: As part of a medical team, anesthetists deserve credit too

A letter to the editor from Leon Retief

Congratulations to the editor of Moose Jaw Today for publishing, on December 27th, the article by Stephanie Taylor on medical assistance in dying. This is an extremely important subject the ethical aspects of which deserve much wider informed discussion.

I always enjoy Mr. Ron Walter’s contributions, but if I may be allowed to nitpick about his story about his coronary bypass surgery, in which he states: “The machine, two surgeons, nurses and five technicians saved me…”

I don’t know how many technicians were present, but I could not help but notice that, apart from the two surgeons, no mention was made of at least one other physician present: the anaesthetist. Anaesthetists are medical specialists and it is in fact advances in anesthesiology which made this kind of surgery (and many others) possible.
