Since bus rides in rural Saskatchewan are usually long trips, one family wants to move their children to Prairie South School Division since their acreage is closer to a division school.

To make this happen, PSSD board trustees voted during their Sept. 6 meeting to approve a land transfer of two parcels from South East Cornerstone School Division (SECSD) and apply to the Ministry of Education to complete the transfer. Trustees also voted to notify SECSD that they planned to proceed with the process and invited the Weyburn-based division to submit the transfer application jointly.

The two pieces of land include NW-30-07-23-W2 and SW-30-07-23-W2. They are in the western corner of SECSD.

As part of their agenda, trustees received a letter from the family with their request, a letter from SECSD approving the release of the students and a map of the location. However, none of those documents were provided in the public agenda package.

The family wants their children to attend Bengough School because their yard site is right on the border between the two school divisions, explained Ron Purdy, superintendent of business. The school division will receive funds for the students attending that school, while the current bus route comes within 7.2 kilometres (4.5 miles) of that location.

“The kids are already registered in Bengough School,” he added.

The next PSSD meeting is Tuesday, Oct. 4.
