For the first time since 2019, the Moose Jaw and District Labour Council is hosting a free hot dog and burger barbecue to celebrate the community’s workers.
The labour council and other local unions and organizations are hosting the free event on Monday, Sept. 5 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Union Centre at 1402 Caribou Street West. The goal is to honour workers who are presently employed and those who are retired.
“We’re pretty excited (to host the event), but we’re a bit nervous too and don’t want to have people in a dangerous situation, so we decided to forgo the entertainment portion and just make sure people got some free food,” said Stacey Landin, Labour Council president.
The Labour Council doesn’t want people to gather too closely, while it was not confident it could sanitize items such as bouncy castles after children used them, she continued. So, the organization decided to take a slow approach this year.
Landin was unsure how many people might turn up, but noted past events have attracted more than 500 people. So, the organization is prepared for a large crowd and has two big barbecues ready to meet those needs.
The Labour Council president added that the event was made possible by the generous support of community unions and organizations.
