The provincial government is undertaking 11 highway improvement projects worth $50 million in the next while, including upgrades to the intersection at Highway 1 and Kalium Road.
As part of the upgrades to this section of road, improvements will include grading, paving and the installation of new ramps at the Kalium access road, according to a government news release. The length of the project is 3.92 kilometres. Contractors will excavate 52,000 cubic metres of earth, will lay a sub-base of 30,000 tons, a main base of 11,000 tons, and will pour 16,000 tons of asphalt concrete.
The 11 projects are part of the 2019 spring tender schedule, which lists more than $50 million in highway improvement and safety projects that will be tendered in the next few weeks. This is in addition to the more than $250 million in construction announced last September as part of the fall tender plan.
More than 110 kilometres of roads will be resurfaced during the spring projects, along with grading, paving, spot improvements, the replacement or rehabilitation of two bridges, and the installation of 21 culverts.
“The Government of Saskatchewan is focused on investing in our highways. With the release of $50 million in projects, people can expect to see crews working on the road,” Lori Carr, minister of highways and infrastructure, said in the news release. “Please slow down and remain patient when passing through construction zones so our crews can upgrade our roads safely.”
Other highlights of the spring construction schedule include:
- Highway 1 bridge replacement over the CPR near Swift Current
- Highway 6 resurfacing near Southey
- Highway 7 resurfacing west of Delisle
- Highway 39 resurfacing near Milestone
- Highway 47 resurfacing south of Estevan
